BackPack Ministry Grants for Episcopal Churches in the Diocese of Lexington Funds were raised at the 2012 annual outreach gala Mardi Gras to assist Episcopal Churches in the Diocese of Lexington in starting BackPack ministries to feed hungry children on weekends during the 2012-1013 school year. Grant application instructions are being developed and will be available here by March 1, 2012. In the meantime, please visit the God’s Pantry website for information about the program.
Mission Lexington Adult Free Clinic Good Shepherd is one five area churches that sponsors the Mission Lexington Adult Free Clinic, established to provide medical care to working families without medical insurance. Doctors donate their time and skill. Nursing, reception, and other jobs are also volunteer. Supplies have been donated from several sources. The building, located on the property of St. Martha's Episcopal Church (1393 Trent Blvd), was renovated by willing volunteers. This whole ministry demonstrates God's love and care for His people.
Church under the Bridge Good Shepherd, along with other area churches, takes turns providing a worship service and a generous meal for needy people in downtown Lexington. Meals are served at Mission House on East Fourth and Martin Luther King, the headquarters of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington. Those interested in helping with the food preparation are welcome to help on the Thursday or Friday or Saturday prior to our date. We also need people to wear a hat and come to serve at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. There is always someone to answer your questions in the Loggia the weeks prior to our hosting Sunday. Monetary donations are always welcome. Specific food donations are often requested, and many desserts are always needed.
Cross Quilts Ministry On Tuesday mornings September through May, parishioners meet in a home to make quilts for people in need. Those with or without quilting skills are welcome as there are many jobs to be done for even one quilt. We'll be glad to teach you! Quilts are given to to newly baptized children in our parish, but more so to needy people outside our parish. Come and sew, work at home, or donate material that can be used for quilts.
Habitat for Humanity Men and women from our parish work with other churches to build a house for needy people. In the past, Good Shepherd has participated in building several homes; at the present, we are not building. Watch for more information about when we might begin a new home. Meals on Wheels is part of Senior Services of Northern Kentucky providing hot and cold meals to seniors needing nutritional assistance. Volunteers are needed for preparation of these meals and for delivering them.
Movable Feast Movable Feast delivers hot, freshly cooked meals, five days a week, to people living with AIDS or HIV-related illnesses as well as individuals who are patients with Hospice of the Bluegrass. Clients can receive nutritional counseling, and menus are modified to address specific nutritional needs.
Reading Camp Reading Camp is a project of the Diocese of Lexington. This ministry hosts several week long camps during the summer to help below average readers improve. Two of the camps are overnight camps; the rest are day camps. Both offer interesting, dynamic reading lessons in the mornings and then all of the usual camp activities in the afternoons and evenings. All camps use volunteers for the teaching and support staff.
Refuge, Inc. Refuge Inc is made up of Good Shepherd parishioners who maintain a house in Lexington for the purpose of resettling refugee families who live there for a time until they can settle more permanently. Help is always needed at times of transition, when one family moves out and before another moves in. During the cold months, November through March, Good Shepherd takes turns with other churches in the area to house and feed homeless men. We host on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Our guests arrive for a dinner prepared at the church, are given sleeping accommodations, a hot breakfast and a bag lunch. It takes many of us in the parish to prepare and present this program. If you are interested in participating - setting up, preparing food, serving, sitting with our guests as hosts, staying overnight, doing laundry - you are welcome to come and be a part of this ministry. |
